Gunther Steiner against Adrian Newey. This also happens during this very long spring break that the F1 Circus has had to endure unwillingly following the cancellation of the two Bahrain and Saudi Arabia GPs due to the war that broke out in the Middle East. The former Haas team principal, who is now the owner of the Tech3 team in MotoGP, spoke again about F1 in a recent episode of the Drive to Wynn podcast. Steiner in particular gave his opinion on the terrible and unexpected crisis that the Aston Martin team is facing, which was expected to be at the top of the standings this year but is instead literally struggling even just to get a car across the finish line.

A Wrong Wish
Steiner, as a former team principal, harshly criticized the choice to put Adrian Newey in that role, the brilliant designer whom Lawrence Stroll brought to Silverstone at a high price, snatching him from Red Bull and Ferrari’s competition. No one has won more than Newey in F1, but the role of team principal is a job that – in Steiner’s opinion – Newey has greatly underestimated. “I believe that if you asked Adrian now he would answer: ‘I don’t know why I did it or why I accepted’ – Steiner stated – I don’t know how it happened, whether he wanted to become team principal or not, but obviously that is not his strong point“.

“He is very good at what he does – the Merano manager added referring to Newey – which is designing cars. Obviously not Aston Martin at the moment, but he will fix it. I think it was an obsession of Adrian’s: ‘I have to be team principal’, without knowing what being a team principal really entails. This shows that people should always be assigned roles where they can express their strengths, without ever over-promoting anyone”.
