“The drivers’ chat is buzzing, they want to be heard”. Wurz ‘ambassador’ to intervene on the regulations

There are those – like Max Verstappen – who face the current situation according to the famous Bartalian motto “it’s all wrong, it’s all to be redone“. Others, like Charles Leclerc, try to mediate between merits – few – and defects – many. Almost no one is 100% satisfied (except perhaps the Mercedes drivers, for obvious reasons of interest) especially after the terrible accident that occurred to Ollie Bearman in the recent Japanese GP.

The new technical regulations introduced this year by F1, after just three rounds, are causing animated discussion among themselves and towards the outside world for the Circus drivers. It is a ‘participation’ that takes place publicly, through statements to the press, but also privately, in the now mythological WhatsApp chat that hosts all the drivers currently involved in F1.

Speaking about these “internal discussions” was the president of the GPDA, the F1 drivers’ ‘union’, Alexander Wurz. The Austrian spoke in an episode of the German F1 podcast Lift And Roast, in which he is regularly involved. “I created that famous WhatsApp group in 2015 or 2016. Right now it’s buzzing. In fact, it’s really buzzing – the former Benetton and Williams driver emphasized with enthusiasm – I’ve never seen it so buzzing as right now, before recording this podcast. It’s buzzing with emotions, possible solutions, technical suggestions, on how to convince everyone now that the drivers must and should be heard“.

An appeal, Wurz’s, which seems aimed above all at the teams and the leaders of F1 and the FIA and whose subtext seems clear enough: let’s take advantage of this month-long break to decide what to do with the future of our sport, the drivers seem ready to do their part.
