Almost a month after the start of the escalation in the Gulf, which has had significant repercussions on international energy markets, the latest data from the EU Commission depicts a favorable situation for Italy in terms of high fuel prices. This was pointed out by Mimit, which cites the Weekly Oil Bulletin, which monitors weekly variations in fuel prices in EU countries. The study finds that the price increase in Italy was the most contained among the main European economies. A trend reflected in both petrol and diesel: in the comparison over the last month, price growth in the Peninsula is significantly lower than that recorded in France, Spain and Germany.
High petrol and diesel prices: Italy smiles
The numbers confirm the greater Italian resilience. Petrol increased by 7,5% in Italy, less than half compared to France (+15,4%) and Spain (+17,8%) and also lower than Germany (+13,8%). Diesel shows a similar dynamic, with an increase of +18,9% in Italy compared to more marked rises in Spain (+32,3%), France (+27,8%) and Germany (+22,9%). Furthermore, in the week of 23 March, average prices in Italy were lower than those in France and Germany: 1,779 €/l for petrol and 2,023 €/l for diesel in Italy, against 1,973 €/l and 2,109 €/l in France and 2,075 €/l and 2,130 €/l in Germany respectively.
Average prices lower than the rest of Europe
According to the ministry, the measures adopted by the Government partially explain this scenario, in particular the monitoring system introduced in January three years ago and the controls activated promptly at the onset of tensions in Iran. These interventions, combined with targeted tools such as the tax credit for hauliers, have contributed to limiting the transfer of energy cost increases onto the prices of transported goods, containing further inflationary pressures. The result is also reflected in macro data: inflation in Italy in February was 1,5%, below the European average of 2,1% (Eurostat).
