MotoGP Austin, Qualifying report

Fabio Di Giannantonio is getting a taste for it! After the great pole in Goiânia, the Roman repeats himself and will start ahead of everyone at COTA in Austin as well. The VR46 rider’s time – 2:00.136 – was clearly the fastest: a full two-tenths ahead of Marco Bezzecchi and three ahead of Pedro Acosta, who join him on the front row.

Bezzecchi, second behind Di Giannantonio as in Goiânia, complains about an obstruction caused by Ai Ogura but is himself sub judice for having blocked Marc Marquez in a Q2 unexpectedly characterized by traffic considering the length of the track. Regardless of the grid composition, today’s qualifying overturns hierarchies that seemed immutable: Di Giannantonio confirms himself as the first Ducati on track, while Marquez’s (on pole here on eight occasions) is the third. The world champion, in fact, is sixth, behind teammate Francesco Bagnaia (also a victim of Ogura’s traffic in the first time attack) and Joan Mir, but clearly has the potential to move up the field in both the Sprint and the GP.

On the third row Jorge Martin, from whom perhaps more was expected after leading FP2, the Spaniard is joined by Alex Marquez and Luca Marini. At the back, rookies Diogo Moreira and Toprak Razgatlioglu are growing, beating their teammates by a tenth and a half, while Franco Morbidelli (penultimate) struggled.
