Fog on the ADUO
What was supposed to be a transparent mechanism to rebalance possible differences between power unit manufacturers – namely the ADUO – turned out to be a very foggy matter.
The first measurements were never made public, to the point that controversies followed in the press with Red Bull asking the FIA to repeat them.

The Anglo-Austrian engine manufacturer actually turned out to be the best of the lot, with an ICE – the only part of the power unit examined in the checks – more powerful even than Mercedes’.
Red Bull has met with the Federation several times, but in the meantime after the Hungarian GP the second ADUO measurement was also triggered. But everything continues to be shrouded in a thick communication fog.
Tombazis is certain: “It’s not worth hiding”
In an interview with Motorsport colleagues, Nikolas Tombazis – FIA technical director – spoke precisely about the effectiveness of the ADUO: “Everything is quite delicate because everyone is very competitive and focused on their own position. It was a real challenge. That said, did everything work well? No, because obviously there are some unhappy parties. Should we think about how to improve it in the future? I would say yes.”

Tombazis then stated that he does not believe in deliberate tactics by engine manufacturers to mask their power: “I don’t think it would be convenient to always stay below in order to continue having development tokens. What else would be the point of tokens if they didn’t allow you to reach the top? I believe the system works as it was developed, but to make it less time-consuming and less controversial, we will have to make improvements.”
