What will be the future of the Mazda CX-3? The Japanese manufacturer’s SUV has remained essentially unchanged since 2014 and went out of production in Japan earlier this year, a moment when its fate seemed uncertain. But now the company has confirmed the arrival of a new generation next year, thus resolving the issue. A confirmation that, Carscoops reports, came hidden in Mazda’s mid-year financial report, which states that the SUV will keep the CX-3 name instead of switching to something like CX-20.

Mazda CX-3 will have a future
A couple of official sketches shown during an event in Thailand last year revealed the kind of evolution the model might have. The drawings showed a compact and sporty SUV featuring the latest evolution of Mazda’s design language, with a front end reminiscent of the new CX-5 and a rear combining a coupe-style roofline with taillights similar to those of the Vision X-Compact concept car, which is set to evolve into the next Mazda2. The difference compared to other jointly developed projects is that the new CX-3 will be based on a Mazda platform: it is expected to be available with gasoline, mild-hybrid, and full-hybrid powertrains.

A wide range of powertrains that, according to the latest rumors, could allow the Japanese automaker to keep the six-speed manual transmission for the non-hybrid variants. In terms of market, the new next-generation subcompact crossover is set to conquer high-volume segments, especially in Asia and Oceania. The company has confirmed that production of the new CX-3 will take place at the AutoAlliance Thailand plant: from there, units assembled in Thailand will be exported to Japan, other ASEAN markets, and further regions of the world starting in 2027.
