It is just one meter tall. One meter. Like a child learning to walk, or like the edge of a kitchen table. Its name is Destrier, and it is a Bugatti. Actually: it is the Bugatti. Only one. A unique specimen, born from the Solitaire Program.

They built it starting from the Bolide, which is already a car designed to do things that normal human beings shouldn’t even imagine: one hundred eighty degrees in a corner at airplane speed, G-forces like a centrifuge, air intakes that look like they came out of a NASA hangar. Then someone said: let’s remove everything. Let’s remove the wings, the fans, the flaps, the useless diffusers. Let’s leave only the proportions. And so this object was born, sitting there, low like a secret, with huge wheels – twenty inches in front, twenty-one in the back – that look like columns of a scaled-down Greek temple.

It is called Destrier because, in the Middle Ages, the destrier was the knight’s horse: the strongest, the noblest, the one not used for plowing or pulling carts. Only for battle and for the beauty of the armor. Here the armor is made of carbon and polished aluminum, the color is a specially invented “Sapphire Celeste”, with diamond sparkles inside the paint, and inside there is a cockpit that smells like a tailor’s atelier: Ambre Voyageur leather, three-dimensional knitted fabric with copper threads, seams that look hand-drawn. No shouts. Everything whispers.
The strategy
Frank Heyl, the design director, says it is not a car to understand with the head, but to feel with the heart. And it’s true: just looking at it, even in a photograph, makes you want to stay silent. Because there is something ancient in this operation. The same mechanical base – a 1600-horsepower W16, four turbines, eight liters of displacement – could become the Bolide, a track beast, or this Concours d’Elegance sculpture. Just like, eighty years ago, the same Type 57 chassis generated both the Tank that won Le Mans and the Atlantic, which many still consider the most beautiful thing ever put on four wheels. A laser-cut plate above the windshield reminds you of this, in case you had forgotten.

Made to be admired
That said, it should be remembered that amid supercars that are increasingly taller, heavier, armed with sensors and software, someone decides to build a car that measures one meter and was made specifically to be looked at. To cross the decades on the lawns of Pebble Beach, or some other Concours where time stands still and people speak in low voices.
It will be presented in Monterey, in mid-August, and then disappear into someone’s collection. One owner only. One destiny only.
