Ferrari Amalfi Spider, the new 2+ spider is a spectacle

In recent weeks there has been a lot of talk, perhaps too much, about the new Ferrari Luce. Forgetting that the Maranello house is also much more. ICE engines, extreme supercars, open-top sports cars. Exactly: open-top sports cars. Like the new Amalfi Spider, a 2+ V8 convertible with a mid-front engine that we drove on the roads of Greece. A true jewel on four wheels, capable of perfectly combining performance, elegance, fun, ease of driving, and versatility. But also and above all the pleasure of open-air driving, with the wind in your hair, and the sun shining on you.

Ferrari Amalfi Spider

The protagonist of this convertible version of the Amalfi is the roof, which opens in 13.5 seconds and can also be operated while driving up to 60 km/h. The reduced dimensions of the folded roof with a thickness of only 220 mm allow to maximize the trunk capacity: 255 liters with the roof closed and 172 liters with the roof open. Ferrari has decided to opt for a five-layer acoustic fabric with thermal and soundproofing performance aligned with those of a retractable hardtop, a choice that allows you to enjoy the refined material of which the roof is made even with the roof open. The result? First-class sound and thermal insulation.

Interface between driver and car

Inside, the Prancing Horse has adopted a dual cockpit layout accompanied by a significant evolution of the interface between driver and car. Special mention for the steering wheel, which under no circumstances abandons physical buttons. But also for the return of the iconic car ignition button and the integrated central display. As mentioned, the cabin configuration is a 2+: in other words, the rear seats can be used to travel with your children (the space is not incredible in the second row) or to extend the loading capacity.

The wind deflector system

A solution Ferrari has focused on is the wind deflector system, integrated into the backrest of the rear bench and operated with a button. It is an element that improves comfort by eliminating the rustling noises that would otherwise enter the car during open-air driving. Everything is designed to ensure maximum driving efficiency, including the design. Sculpted volumes, clean surfaces, elegant lines: a perfect mix. At the front of the car, there is a large air intake and a long, sculpted hood housing the engine. At the rear, the integrated active spoiler ensures great stability especially at high speeds. Completing the aesthetic overview are forged wheels and carbon fiber finishes.

Power and torque from a true Ferrari

We mentioned the engine. It represents in every respect the latest evolution of the 3,855 cm3 twin-turbo V8 from the F154 family. In this configuration, Ferrari has optimized it to reach a maximum power of 640 HP at 7,500 rpm and 760 Nm of torque, with a specific power of 166 HP per liter and the limiter at 7,600 rpm. A choice that allows making the most of the continuous and increasing power curve. Thanks to these numbers, the Ferrari Amalfi Spider accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and is capable of reaching a top speed of 320 km/h.

Significant performance increase

A big leap in performance then, made possible by the evolution of the boost management system. The work done by the Maranello house allows independent control of the rotational speed of the two turbochargers with dedicated calibration and an increase in the maximum turbo speed up to 171,000 rpm. Another highlight: for the first time on a Prancing Horse engine, a low viscosity oil has been introduced, which reduces cold resistance by 30% compared to the previous one.

Dual-clutch gearbox with Manettino

Paired with the engine is an eight-speed dual-clutch wet sump gearbox, which made its debut with the SF90 Stradale. But in this case, it has seen an optimization of management strategies, thanks to a more powerful control unit and greater integration with the engine software. Obviously, the iconic Manettino could not be missing, which on the Amalfi Spider offers five positions: Wet, Comfort, Sport, Race, and ESC-Off. Each of these is designed to select the intervention levels of various systems such as F1-Trac, suspension damping, and e-diff.

Behind the wheel of the Ferrari Amalfi Spider

It is hard to find faults once you get behind the wheel of this spider. The sound insulation developed by Ferrari is incredible, even at high speeds and with the roof open, the driving silence is appreciable because it is only interrupted by the aggressive and captivating sound of the V8. The car’s acceleration is frightening, the torque is delivered incredibly and you just have to push the gas pedal all the way down to find yourself glued to the asphalt in the blink of an eye.

Excellent aerodynamics and braking

The aerodynamics also receive full marks, finding their maximum expression in the active movable wing perfectly integrated into the rear tail. It has three configurations, automatically adjusted based on speed, longitudinal and lateral accelerations. Estimates show that in HD configuration (the highest) it generates up to 110 kg more downforce at 250 km/h, with a declared drag increase of less than 4%. In general, the car’s setup ensures more precise control, while the evo ABS system on all types of grip improves braking performance and stability. The result is universal: open-air driving has never been so thrilling.
