Although gasoline has reached a price of 2 euros per liter, the government has decided to confirm the discount only in favor of diesel, which in turn yesterday broke the 2.1 euro mark. La Stampa clearly states this in the newspaper on newsstands this morning. The Council of Ministers has decided to allocate another 245 million euros to extend until August 25 the only 17-cent cut on diesel. Otherwise, the cut, the newspaper reminds, would expire tomorrow.

Discount only on diesel
“We are trying to do our part to contain the effects of price increases, in an international phase still very complex. From August 25, the mobile excise mechanism will come back into effect, which we will continue to monitor closely to evaluate any further intervention,” explained Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Facebook. To finance the new decree, this time the government has decided to cut some ministry expenses. And the reason is quickly explained: everything raised from the July extra revenue will be enough to cover only one extra day of discounts.
Cuts to ministries: divided government
Not the entire government seems to agree on this measure. According to La Stampa on newsstands today, Minister Giorgetti would have pushed to downsize the intervention on excise duties favoring targeted aid to businesses and families in greater difficulty. A line that, however, Giorgia Meloni would not even have wanted to consider. According to the MEF, in any case, no one will lose out. Motorists, since pump prices will be lower. And not even the ministers, in light of the fact that the cut with which the diesel measure was financed is considered a sort of temporary loan.
