Gasly edged out Russell by 60 thousandths
Pierre Gasly achieved a sensational pole position at Monza by beating George Russell by 60 thousandths. Andrea Kimi Antonelli gave a slipstream to his teammate on the starting straight, but the fact that Max Verstappen was too close ahead of Russell compromised the English driver’s pole attempt according to Toto Wolff.

“Verstappen ruined Russell’s lap, he slowed down a lot before launching and Antonelli was basically in his slipstream and consequently Russell was then too close to Verstappen who was clever, we underestimated him, we should have left more space between us and Max”, Wolff said to the microphones of Sky Sports Uk.
The Mercedes team principal was not so surprised by the Alpine breakthrough: “I’m really happy that Alpine took pole. They have gone through really tough times – Wolff said – we gave our small contribution and on a single lap they are always dangerous because they have great aerodynamic efficiency that guarantees an incredible top speed”.
