Verstappen, a future at McLaren?

Max Verstappen always dominates the F1 market. The balance of the grid for the upcoming seasons will depend on the movements, or even the lack of movements, of the four-time world champion. A potential departure of Verstappen from Red Bull, despite a contract valid until 2028, would trigger a real domino effect among the top teams and the most important drivers in the paddock. The McLaren drivers, notably Oscar Piastri, have particularly perked up: the papayas would currently be the most likely destination should Verstappen decide to activate the clause to free himself at the end of the championship from the contract that binds him to Red Bull until the end of 2028.

Meanwhile, at Spa-Francorchamps, a detail did not go unnoticed. Verstappen’s entourage was seen in the McLaren hospitality: officially the meeting concerned Dries van Langendonck, a talent from the McLaren Academy hired by the Verstappen Racing team, but according to Ralf Schumacher, the face-to-face could also have offered an opportunity to discuss the future of the world champion.

“I saw images of Raymond Vermeulen’s manager (Verstappen’s manager, editor’s note) and Jos in the McLaren hospitality at Spa. It won’t have been a coincidence, there will undoubtedly have been conversations there,” this was the German’s comment to his compatriots at Sky Sports Deutschland.

The former German driver then added ironically: “They certainly didn’t just stop for a coffee, which apparently is better in the Red Bull hospitality, so I’m told. I’m curious to know what’s happening there.”

Schumacher, however, urges caution: “Formula 1 remains unpredictable. Something happens every weekend. If the car suddenly started performing well again and the atmosphere became more positive, everything could change in the blink of an eye.”

A particular contingency would play a role in Verstappen’s possible stay at Red Bull: McLaren is happy with its drivers and has shown it can win everything with this “setup,” while Mercedes (unlike a year ago) holds all the cards, thanks to a superior car compared to the rest of the competition. In short, Max is tempting and would be an undeniable added value, but on the other hand, there’s no emergency to snap up such a formidable champion.
