Montoya was a reporter on the grid
One wonders how it was possible to lose the Miami GP with a very heavy double zero for the Constructors’ Championship in Sunday’s Canadian GP. McLaren was among the ‘victims’ of the weather confusion before the start because the Woking team’s drivers decided to start on intermediate tires.

The McLarens had a good start because intermediate tires are easier to bring up to temperature. After a few hundred meters, however, it became clear that the tire choice was wrong. Norris and Piastri returned to the pits abandoning any hope of fighting for top positions.
Juan Pablo Montoya was on the starting grid and recounted what he gathered before the start: “At McLaren in the last year and a half they have had the best car, now to try to win they are forced instead to think of something different or brilliant, to take risks in short – Montoya said when reached by sports betting – probably right now McLaren is the second-best car on the grid after Mercedes, but if you want to beat Mercedes you can’t afford mistakes like this.”

The decision was made by Piastri
“I was incredulous – he added – as far as I understand, the decision was made by Piastri. Piastri was very worried because from Turn 8 to Turn 10 the track was very wet and according to him it was for intermediates. In those conditions the last word normally belongs to the driver. The team trusts the driver and his ability to make the right decision. The weather forecasting systems used by F1 teams are very advanced. I wonder if they had predicted more rain. The wind picked up. When I positioned myself in front of the starting grid, I was facing the Mercedes while they were lifting it on the stands. And at the end of the national anthem, you could distinguish wet and dry areas where the wind was blowing. You could see the dry shadow of the wing. It started to drizzle. But we had run the F2 race shortly before and everyone had slicks despite the track being much wetter.”
