Leclerc: “This year will be important for my future at Ferrari. Never before have I felt so close to the world championship”

A decisive year

As told on the eve of the 2026 world championship, this season will be decisive for the future of many prominent figures in the Ferrari world. Starting from the team principal, Frederic Vasseur, and moving down to the drivers, Lewis Hamilton – very disappointing in 2025 – and Charles Leclerc – still waiting for his championship chance.
In these first two races, Ferrari appeared to be clearly the second force on track, behind a super Mercedes, and there is moderate optimism in Maranello, with the hope that updates can give the SF-26 a chance to challenge the Silver Arrows.

What will Leclerc do?

Several times last year there was talk of Charles Leclerc being in the sights of Lawrence Stroll and Adrian Newey’s Aston Martin, but the disastrous start to the season certainly does not make the British team one of the most desirable seats on the starting grid.
During an interview with Sky UK, Leclerc was asked how important he considers this championship for his future at Ferrari: “It is important. Driving for Ferrari has always been a dream come true. I am very focused on this year and I hope to finally return to the top step of the podium as soon as possible.”

On the chances of winning the world championship in 2026, Leclerc was cautious but sent a signal of hope: “It’s too early to say. I think that, speaking of the innovations and what I’ve seen in the car, I feel closer than ever – compared to the past with Ferrari – to achieving that goal.”
