The debut of the Macarena
Barring any last-minute upheavals, always possible at the start of such a particular season as this one, Ferrari this Chinese weekend should officially debut the new and much-talked-about rear wing nicknamed ‘Macarena’, which ‘flips’ open, thereby reducing the car’s air resistance on the straight.

In the press conference held before the journalists present in Shanghai, the rear wing was one of the topics on which attention was most concentrated, and Lewis Hamilton showed that he greatly appreciated the effort made by the team to introduce this new technical ‘weapon’ as soon as possible, in a development challenge that everyone considers crucial to try and challenge Mercedes for the title.
Applause for the team
“Further tests to do? I don’t think so. I think in Bahrain we dedicated a whole day or so to the wing, so I think it’s okay. But we’ve done all the necessary work and I’m very grateful to the team – commented the seven-time world champion – because it was actually supposed to be introduced later. The team worked hard to develop it and bring it here. So for me it’s just fantastic to see that the team is fighting, that they are pushing and working hard at the factory to be able to make improvements, because that’s how you win at this game. I believe that last year we couldn’t see the full development potential of the team, because we were focused on this year’s season“.
Finally, the Englishman – appearing in a decidedly good mood – joked about the nicknames given to the red car’s wing: “I don’t know if it has an official name. I think so, but I have to check, because Macarena now dominates. Someone came up with this Macarena, and I don’t know, I have no idea why. It’s the flip-flop wing“.
