F1 Monza, the report of Free Practice 3
George Russell confirms his status as clear favorite for the Monza Qualifying by finishing the last free practice session on top. The Mercedes driver laps in 1:22.219, putting more than two tenths ahead of Lewis Hamilton‘s Ferrari and three and a half tenths ahead of Max Verstappen.
Also from the last 60 minutes of practice action, it is clear how important slipstreaming and traffic management will be in qualifying. Having a good tow can shave precious tenths off the performance, and Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen know this well, as they fight for Charles Leclerc’s slipstream in the final moments with a rough duel: the skirmishes for position start at Ascari and continue until a decisive overtake by Super Max at the Prima Variante.

Behind the top 3 is Kimi Antonelli, who performs slipstreaming tests with Russell (not all perfectly executed, to the point that the British driver gets the best time with a weak tow from Alex Albon). The Bolognese is 11 thousandths behind Verstappen and places ahead of Lando Norris by four hundredths.

While McLaren appears to struggle especially in the final part of the lap, Ferrari – even with ADUO-2 – gives the impression of being able to defend itself on a single lap from Mercedes (power unit upgrade) only thanks to slipstreams. Sixth place for the other Red car of Charles Leclerc (without a tow) ahead of Arvid Lindblad, Oscar Piastri, Pierre Gasly, and Franco Colapinto.
