Gasly: “The incident with Lawson was totally avoidable”

What happened

In an attempt to overtake Liam Lawson on the outside during the 6th lap, in an early phase of the race already marked by many overtakes, the New Zealander made contact with the left rear wheel of the Alpine, which flipped over and ended up against the protective barriers. Despite the initial scare of the crowd, Gasly immediately reassured everyone with a team radio message, but when commenting on his short race he did not hold back a criticism towards Lawson:

“First of all, I’m fine after the crash with Lawson – he confirmed – it was definitely a scary feeling to roll over in a Formula 1 car, so I’m glad it wasn’t too serious and that I managed to get out unscathed. Unfortunately, my start was quite good, maybe even too good, as I gained several positions, but then I had to brake sharply to avoid Verstappen who had spun, and I lost positions, finding myself in the mid-pack. I was confident in our race pace, especially after yesterday, so I knew that if we had clean air, we could score important points. Then my race ended with the crash with Liam, which, in my opinion, was totally avoidable and should not have happened. He came to apologize to me, but I feel sorry for the team because we had the pace and deserved points. There is a lot to review ahead of Canada to continue improving the package. We are the fifth fastest team and we need to consolidate this position and keep chasing the group ahead.”
