F1, live commentary of FP2 of the Spanish GP

18:00 – Checkered flag: the second free practice of the Spanish GP at Madring ends here!

17:59 – Problems for Lance Stroll, who is asked to slow down and return to the pits.

17:57 – Three minutes left in this session but there are no big indications on race pace, as traffic is an issue. However, we can tell you that Charles Leclerc passed Sergio Perez exiting the Monumental.

17:54 – Don’t expect huge lap time improvements: all drivers are on track with a high fuel load for race pace tests. Medium tires used by Antonelli, Hamilton, Russell, and Piastri, while Leclerc and Verstappen are on Softs (Norris is still in the pits).

17:52 – Small mistake at the Turn 5 chicane for both Nico Hulkenberg and Charles Leclerc: both cut the corner by passing to the right of the curb on the asphalt runoff.

17:49 – Max Verstappen complains about the steering of his Red Bull which suddenly “feels very stiff“. Via radio, Gianpiero Lambiase explains that there are no problems and he can stay on track.

17:47 – Green light and the last 13 minutes of FP2 of the 2026 Spanish GP restart. Pierre Gasly immediately on track (with the rear flooded with flow-viz, the fluorescent paint to evaluate aerodynamic flows), followed by Bortoleto, Ocon, Bearman, and Hulkenberg.

17:46 – The session will restart exactly in one minute, at 17:47, with 13 minutes of FP2 still to run.

17:44 – Obviously this interruption benefits Lando Norris, who was the only driver forced to stay in the pits due to a technical problem: his mechanics continue working to get him back on track, but meanwhile the others are stopped for the red flag.

17:42 – Replay of Arvid Lindblad’s accident:

17:39 – Just moments before the red flag, Charles Leclerc had set another fast lap on Softs (now used), lowering to 1:33.775. The Monegasque thus brought the gap to 113 thousandths from the fastest time.

17:37 – Lindblad lost control of his Racing Bulls under braking, sliding the rear and then crashing heavily into the barriers. A pity because the young Englishman was definitely among the “best on track” with his fourth time just 2 tenths behind Antonelli.

17:35 – Red flag! Arvid Lindblad crashed into the barriers at Turn 13. Nothing serious for him, as he exited the car without physical injuries, but the VCARB03 is destroyed against the Tecpro barriers.

17:33 – In FP1 Hamilton was found impeding (which usually is not penalized in free practice) Sainz and Hulkenberg. Now he does it on Tsunoda, who complains via radio: “What is he doing?“. The Englishman then apologized by raising his hand towards the home Racing Bulls driver.

17:31 – One who definitely did well is Arvid Lindblad, who took the fourth fastest time, just 228 thousandths behind Antonelli.

17:30 – George Russell aborted his attempt, returning to the pits perhaps for a front setup change. Antonelli also complained about his lap: “I really felt bad“.

17:29 – Andrea Kimi Antonelli improves again and sets the bar at 1:33.662. Good laps also from Hamilton and Leclerc: Lewis is second with a 149 thousandths gap, while Charles is third at 158 thousandths from the top.

17:28 – Piastri is the first to complete the qualifying simulation on new Softs and is fifth, behind Leclerc but ahead of Hamilton. There is great curiosity about the Ferrari times, as in FP1 the performance on the “red” Pirellis was not great…

17:27 – Obviously the standings below are with all drivers on Medium tires, except Hulkenberg who chose Hard tires.

17:26 – Since we have Antonelli, Leclerc, Lawson, Piastri, and Verstappen on new Softs for the qualifying simulation, let’s recap the standings situation with just under 35 minutes to the checkered flag:

17:25 – Attention because, surprisingly, Fernando Alonso is on track! The Asturian driver is at the wheel of his Aston Martin with new Medium tires to do his first lap this Madrid afternoon.

17:24 – There is now some calm: outside the pits we have only Bortoleto, Albon, Ocon, Bearman, Piastri, and Lawson. Preparations are underway to mount Softs and record the classic qualifying simulation on new Soft tires.

17:21 – Race against time in the McLaren garage to replace the gearbox of Lando Norris’s MCL40: it’s not certain the world champion will make it back on track before the session ends, but there is the will to try to give the Englishman the chance to do some laps.

17:18 – Actually no, Max’s lap was deleted for track limits violation at Turn 17. No big deal because we have a new leader with Andrea Kimi Antonelli setting a 1:33.926. Behind him, with a 99 thousandths gap, George Russell.

17:17 – Max Verstappen takes the lead on his seventh lap with the same set of new Medium tires: 1:34.378 for the Red Bull Dutchman.

17:16 – Lewis Hamilton makes a mistake, very wide exiting the usual Turn 17 and thus unable to improve.

17:14 – Antonelli complains about Perez, who moved at Turn 17 and cut the corner to let him pass, but only after Kimi had already aborted his attempt: “He always does these things“.

17:12 – Charles Leclerc closes in on Kimi Antonelli and couldn’t have done more: the Monegasque on equal Medium tires is just 1 thousandth behind the 20-year-old Mercedes home driver. Russell is now third at 2 tenths, with Hamilton fourth at 4 tenths but just back on track after a flap angle change on the front wing.

17:07 – Andrea Kimi Antonelli immediately takes the lead on his first attempt with new Mediums: 1:34.428 for the World Championship leader (and now session leader) who puts 8 tenths on Charles Leclerc. Third place for Oscar Piastri who slots between the two Ferraris.

17:05 – Behind the two Ferraris is now Arvid Lindblad, followed by Max Verstappen and George Russell. There is a possible technical issue for Lando Norris, who reports via radio that “gear changes are really problematic“.

17:03 – Ferrari restarts on Mediums and picks up where it left off, at least while using Mediums, in FP1: Charles Leclerc leads with 1:35.557, ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton.

17:00 – Green light and the second free practice session of the 2026 Spanish GP starts.

16:55 – Five minutes to the start of the session, so let’s look up, but figuratively because inside the Madring press room hangar, at most, you can see some steel pipes. In Madrid, a fantastic late summer sun continues to shine: 30 degrees air temperature, almost 53 degrees on the asphalt.

16:50 – The session starts with bad news for Fernando Alonso’s Spanish fans: the crowd favorite will not take part in the second free practice session of the Madrid weekend due to a technical problem with the clutch that won’t be repairable before the checkered flag. F1 Spanish GP, second free practice live

Good afternoon to all of you, dear FormulaPassion.it readers. We are still in the press room of the new Madring circuit to bring you live coverage of the second free practice of the F1 Spanish GP, which will start at 17:00 Italian (and Madrid) time and end exactly one hour later, at 18:00. After the first laps in FP1, now it’s time to get serious, with teams and drivers who already have an idea (and especially lots of data to analyze) about the track and can start with the first real qualifying simulations and the first long runs, as is tradition in FP2.

In the first runs this morning, the fastest was George Russell, who beat teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli by a couple of tenths and the two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. The Cavallino drivers, however, were not able to make the most of the softer tires, so a more impactful improvement is expected. Will these be the values for the rest of the weekend?
