F1 Netherlands, the Sprint report
There was no need for a Sprint at Zandvoort, and the short Dutch race clearly confirms the big mistake F1 made in setting the calendar. In the Netherlands, a tired parade takes place, with one overtake (arriving on lap 18 of 24) and a thousand yawns. Everything goes in favor of George Russell, who just needs to defend the pole to get Saturday’s win. The Brit finishes ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris.

It is precisely Leclerc who makes the only overtake of the Sprint: well done to the Monegasque for staying close to Norris while saving battery and using it all at the end of the finish straight. Also a good choice by Ferrari to fit the soft tire on number 16, the only one along with Oliver Bearman to run on the soft. The report could stop here, because Leclerc’s overtake is the only noteworthy element of a half hour that gives reason to those who today chose the sea. And, hopefully, it will make F1 think not so much about the number of Sprints (which will almost certainly increase) but about the tracks on which to propose them. And then luckily the rain hits Zandvoort just 20 seconds after the finish, otherwise it would have hidden an obvious problem, especially for those who make the show their banner.
Not even in the standings are there big changes, with Kimi Antonelli limiting the damage thanks to fourth place. The Bolognese has the pace to overtake Norris but on this track and with this format (without even pit stops) it is difficult to score with a maneuver. Points also for Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, stuck behind the four-time world champion. For all three, basically, an anonymous race. Pierre Gasly on the updated Alpine also moves the standings.
