Interview with Leo Turrini
The back-and-forth exchange between Stefano Domenicali, CEO of F1, and the critics of the Circus who blame him and Liberty Media for having distorted and ruined the sport and who contest the current technical regulations of Formula 1, has not yet ended. The last word, for now, went to Domenicali himself. The top F1 official spoke on QN to journalist Leo Turrini, his longtime friend, sending back the criticisms about this new era of the Circus and also about the current technical regulations
“I am one of them – Domenicali told Turrini, addressing the ‘old school’ F1 fans – even generationally I am a boomer and of course I understand the concerns and complaints of those who rightly like to call themselves ‘purists’. After that, the world changes and things evolve. Not automatically for the better, sometimes corrections are necessary. But to say that modern F1 is all rubbish, well, no“.
Who decides the regulations
Domenicali then, on the now much-debated issue of the new technical regulations, made it clear that they were not decided by F1, shifting part of the responsibility to the FIA and teams: “It is not in question here that with the new regulations the way of driving the cars has changed. It’s true – Domenicali confirmed – but it has happened in the past and will happen again. Obviously I did not write these regulations, Liberty Media did not impose them. They were agreed upon between the international federation and the Constructors, some years ago now. It is childish to portray everything as the result of a huge conspiracy. But whose? For what?”.
“I said that things change and at present Formula 1 has never been so popular – Domenicali concluded – it has never had such an important following among young people and women. Certainly it does not depend on the new technical regulations, because this trend had already been consolidated with the old rules, when Verstappen’s Red Bull dominated. I think a balance in judgments would be needed: in Miami we saw a spectacular weekend”.
