From pole to victory
One day after his first pole position of the season, Lando Norris completed his impeccable weekend at the Hungaroring by also stepping onto the top step of the podium, collecting his 12th career victory and his first in 2026. The reigning world champion is now preparing to enjoy his summer holidays with the winner’s prize, the same one awarded to McLaren, which became the team to beat after the Hungarian qualifying, where the efficiency of the update package emerged.
The satisfaction
Behind Norris’s success, however, there is the bitter taste of a one-two finish that could have materialized with Oscar Piastri’s 2nd place, which faded due to the Australian driver’s retirement caused by a gearbox failure: “The car is lively, it’s still difficult to drive, but I feel very capable of driving it – Norris commented to Sky Sport F1 after the race – I think I have some great ideas on how to get speed out of this car, how to set lap times and how to make the car work. Obviously my first lap wasn’t the best, but apart from that I had a lot of confidence in winning the race, because my pace was very strong today, whatever happened. I could have gone long with the VSC, or I could have simply pitted and then come back with fresh tires.”
A victory that made McLaren’s #1 very happy and proud, who in post-GP statements added another comment that summarized his pride: “The pace was fantastic, it was probably one of my best performances as a driver, so I am very satisfied with this.”
