Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio, luxury and sportiness

Maserati has recently renewed its range with the new versions of, GranTurismo, Grecale and GranCabrio. Three different models, a single soul: that of the Trident. Which in the future will also affect two new E-segment models, of which we currently know little or nothing. But the present requires us to focus on these three products, which, together with the GT2 Stradale, make up the current line-up of the Modena-based company.

Maserati GranTurismo, what luxury

Starting with the GranTurismo, Maserati’s work has led to a consistent use of lighter materials, consider the choice to use aluminum for 65%. The heart of the range bears the name Nettuno: it is obviously the iconic 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, capable of delivering up to 490 hp in the GT version and 590 hp in the Trofeo version (torque is 650 Nm). Different powers also mean different performances: the GT accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, the Trofeo does it in 3.5 seconds. While the top speed goes from 302 km/h in the first case to over 320 km/h in the second.

Also 100% electric Folgore

The 760 hp Folgore version also appears in the range, the first car in Maserati’s history to adopt a 100% battery-electric propulsion system. It is powered by three motors – one front and two rear – completely decoupled, and is fed by a 92.5 kWh battery. The House of the Trident has decided in this case to adopt the innovative AWD Disconnect system, which helps to increase the range up to 540 km, about 86 km more than the previous generation. To go from 20 to 80% battery takes 18 minutes, while 5 minutes are enough to recharge 100 km of range with 270 kW power. Furthermore, on the Folgore, as well as on the GT, the new Country driving mode also debuts, which raises the ride height by 20 mm to tackle uneven surfaces up to 120 km/h.

Renewed design, especially at the front

From an aesthetic point of view, in addition to a new front end, Maserati has decided to include seven new exterior colors in the range, such as Green Jupiter Matte, Denim Blue, Glossy or Matte Bronze, Mystery Grey, Velvet Red and Lyrical Gold. Elsewhere we find redesigned air intakes with slots for boundary layer aspiration, external air-curtain developed via CFD for better airflow management around the wheels, and an optimized central splitter to increase front downforce. At the rear, we find taillights with new clear lenses.

New steering wheel and fine materials

Internally, however, a new racing-inspired steering wheel appears, as well as a new Digital Clock with a metal bezel and octagonal shape, and a new PRND selector with three-dimensional controls. Another novelty is the parking function offered by the steering wheel paddles for ICE versions, a choice Maserati adopted based on customer feedback. As for materials, the House of the Trident introduces new proposals in Bordeaux leather and Nude Alcantara, or Black and Tan leather, as well as the new Mahogany Trim.

Maserati GranCabrio, open-top

Alongside the GranTurismo, we find the GranCabrio, which is somewhat its open-top sister. In this case too, there is a Folgore version, which Maserati itself defines as the only 100% electric luxury convertible on the market. Compared to the coupe, it boasts a peak range of 508 km. Folgore or not Folgore, the core of this variant is the soft fabric top available in five colors: Black, Blue Marine, Titan Grey, Greige, and Granata: it can be operated up to a speed of 50 km/h, opens in 14 seconds and closes in 16, and the opening/closing movement can be activated at any time via the touch button on the comfort display.

How it drives on the road and how much it costs

On the road, the new Maserati GranTurismo is pure sportiness. Always glued to the asphalt, it guarantees maximum acceleration every time the accelerator pedal is pressed and never loses grip, even when tackling fast corners in a more ‘spirited’ way. The Skyhook air suspensions with adjustable height and calibration work with great precision, allowing the car to best tackle all road surface irregularities. The driving sensation is maximally engaging, also thanks to the work Maserati has done on the gearbox. In particular, constant throttle upshifts have been delayed, while downshifts are anticipated in response to brake pedal pressure. On the Italian market, the Maserati GranTurismo starts from 163,800 euros for the internal combustion versions and 161,200 euros for the Folgore, while the GranCabrio starts from 174,100 euros in the internal combustion variant and 171,600 in the electric one.
