Marquez at -97, is he a threat?
Aprilia, in this fantastic start to its 2026 world championship, has never ruled out Marc Marquez, despite the enormous physical difficulties encountered by the Spanish rider so far.
The pole position and success in the Balaton Sprint by a Marquez still far from his best form ignited the crazy idea of a world championship comeback by the Ducati rider. But clearly the 97 points to recover on Marco Bezzecchi are a gigantic mountain, but Marquez himself is determined to recover and go strong: “I don’t know if I’ll be back to what I was in 2025, but I know I’ll be back. I’d rather die on the shore than not try at all”, he explained to Dazn Spain.
Lorenzo is realistic
Still on Spanish television, Jorge Lorenzo emphasized: “The championship is very complicated for him. Those in front would have to make many mistakes, one after another. For Marquez, the important thing is that he returns at least to the level he was at before the injury in Indonesia. If that were the case, he would go far.”
For Lorenzo, Marquez’s real goal is 2027: “Next year he will come back very strong. With Pedro Acosta, we will surely have a spectacular duel between youth and experience.”
Lorenzo was then impressed by Marquez’s growth: “He is in a very zen, very mature, very rational, very strategic moment. Very careful not to make mistakes, aware of his strengths and how to exploit them at all times. I was struck by his phrase when he said he wants to enjoy the moment, accepting the bad and the good.”
Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez were teammates in 2019 at Honda, with the former collecting just 28 points and the latter becoming champion with 420 points.
