Max Verstappen was phenomenal in his stints driving in a 24-hour race at the Nurburgring with over 350,000 spectators who came to admire the feats of the four-time F1 world champion. The Dutch driver was acrobatic in the first stint and at night fought with Maro Engel, with even a contact between the two.
According to Dani Juncadella there is no connection between that episode and the driveshaft failure: “No, I don’t think so, it’s something that happened many hours before – said the Spaniard – it’s simply motorsport, these things happen. Unfortunately, today it happened to us, but I don’t think anyone is to blame. I left the pits, everything seemed fine, but after about half or a third of the lap I saw a fault message flashing intermittently. I reset the message and everything seemed fine, but then I realized the ABS was not working, so I was driving without ABS; actually, it wasn’t that bad, I somehow managed: I slightly adjusted the brake balance to try to avoid locking the front wheels, and it was drivable. I had the impression they wanted me to return to the pits to identify the problem, but I thought it was better to continue and maybe understand what we could do. Then I started hearing noises and, of course, the car became undrivable. I had the feeling that at some point something would break. So I slowly returned to the pits and we found a problem in the driveshaft that then caused some collateral damage to the rest of the car. Probably this is what caused the problem with the electronics that got confused and deactivated the ABS.”
