Interviewed by Sky Sport MotoGP even before his penalty for Sunday’s GP was made official and public, the Ducati superstar publicly apologized to Di Giannantonio, after having already done so privately. Marquez also said he went to Race Direction and explicitly asked for a penalty himself.

“When you crash it’s always a shame, but when you crash involving another rider it’s even worse because you feel bad for the other rider – Marquez told Sky – in this case Diggia couldn’t do anything, it was my mistake in the braking of turn 12: I braked but I didn’t consider the slipstream of three bikes in front and I couldn’t stop it anymore. Either I hit him or I threw myself inside to then be able to turn outside and that’s what I did, but when I hit the bump at the apex of the corner the front tucked and I had the misfortune of taking Diggia down. Tomorrow I must be penalized, because these are things that when they happen need a penalty. In race direction? I said ‘I must be penalized, you decide the penalty’. Because in the end I was wrong. The mistake was one of judgment because I didn’t calculate the slipstream of three bikes. I tried to stop it and I didn’t succeed.
