The next generation of the BMW 3 Series with internal combustion engines is entering the final phase of development ahead of series production. A central point of the design evolution is the propulsion concept open to different technologies, allowing the same product base to be adapted to models with different architectures. Alongside the fully electric BMW i3, the new 3 Series range will indeed include new models with four- and six-cylinder engines, characterized by high efficiency and equipped with 48 V mild-hybrid technology.
BMW 3 Series will not be only electric
Regardless of the chosen propulsion solution, the new BMW 3 Series continues the legacy of the German brand’s compact sporty sedans. The Neue Klasse design gives the car a more distinctive and personal identity. The front end modernizes the typical four-eyed element, while longer wheelbase, reduced overhangs, and surfaces with a strong imprint define the exterior profile. The interior also evolves with the new BMW Panoramic iDrive display and control architecture, integrated into the BMW Operating System X.
Final dynamic tests for the new sedan
Technically, the car is undergoing the final round of dynamic tests at the BMW Group test center near Miramas, in southern France, where the team can use diverse tracks and different road conditions to analyze and optimize every aspect of its behavior. Starting from the previous phase, the testing program has already moved from trials on icy and snowy surfaces in Arjeplog to tuning sessions at the Nürburgring. The chassis has been further refined with a weight balance between axles close to ideal, a longer wheelbase, and wider front and rear tracks.

Many innovations and high performance
Specifications also include a double-joint front axle with elastic mounts, a five-link rear axle, and updates to braking and steering systems, as well as variants such as adaptive suspension and adaptive M suspension. The range will also include the new flagship M350 xDrive model with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine (48 V mild-hybrid), eight-speed Steptronic transmission, maximum power of 326 kW/443 hp, torque of 580 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, and a top speed of 250 km/h. There will also be intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. Production will start by the end of the year.
