F1 Madrid, the report of Free Practice 1

F1 embraces the Madrid circuit for the first time and does so with a Mercedes already in race shape. The Brackley team makes the difference with the soft tire and starts the Spanish weekend with a one-two signed by George Russell-Kimi Antonelli: the British driver (1:34.077) is very quick this time to adapt to the circuit and beats the World Championship leader by three tenths on the fourth attempt with soft tires (a sign that tire degradation is very limited).

The hour of Madrid practice confirms two aspects: Mercedes remains competitive even on a track where having the most powerful engine is not essential (not by chance they also won in Monte-Carlo) while effective communication between track engineer and driver will be crucial to avoid impeding and accidents. Lewis Hamilton knows something about this, involved in at least five potentially dangerous situations (both as victim and as culprit). The seven-time world champion finishes the Madrid FP1 in fourth position, but with medium tires compared to the soft used by Mercedes. The soft tire is a theme at Ferrari: while the W17 lowers the references by a second when switching from medium to soft, the SF-26 does not improve so noticeably, both due to traffic and some mistakes, but perhaps also because the references with the medium were really good (Ferrari is firmly in the lead until the last 20 minutes). The fact is that Charles Leclerc only shaves off a tenth and a half and is third at +0.459, Hamilton’s best time remains even with yellow tires.

Further behind are Max Verstappen and Lando Norris (on a McLaren that on paper should already have the potential shown in Hungary and the Netherlands), closing the top-10 are Lindblad, Piastri, Hülkenberg and Lawson.
