Ferrari ahead of everyone in free practice in Hungary: Hamilton leads Leclerc, Antonelli impresses with pace

Two clues don’t make a case, but they can give very strong indications. In Hungary, Ferrari confirms its presence: Lewis Hamilton finishes at the top of FP2 with 1:18.729, Charles Leclerc follows by 148 milliseconds. The rest of the competition trails by half a second, starting with Lando Norris.

The SF-26 is so far the reference car, at least on a single lap. At the Hungaroring, it’s crucial to immediately get into the best conditions for Qualifying, considering that overtakes are not trivial. And Ferrari, which this year has often built its results on race pace rather than outright performance, immediately shows itself competitive on a track that enhances the chassis in slow corners.

The performance of the car, however, does not change the team’s approach. In the statements that will arrive in a few minutes, Frederic Vasseur will be the first to temper expectations. Not for gamesmanship, but because the memory of Monte-Carlo, a circuit with similar characteristics to the Hungaroring, is still fresh. Some different indications also come from the race pace, where Ferrari confirms its competitiveness but has to contend with an excellent Kimi Antonelli and Norris.

Antonelli finishes 13th, two seconds off the top, but the gap is affected by the failure to complete the time attack after a mistake in turn 6. The Mercedes driver, however, said he was satisfied with the behavior of the W17, while George Russell brings the other Silver Arrow car to fifth position, paying a second to Ferrari despite the resolution of the problems that emerged in Spa.

Red Bull opens the weekend with Max Verstappen‘s fourth fastest time, seven tenths behind Hamilton, and Isack Hadjar’s sixth place. Meanwhile, the complicated moment for Oscar Piastri continues, only eighth and also behind Liam Lawson, who makes the most of the updated Racing Bulls. In the back, Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso returns: the Silverstone team needs time to understand the potential of the important upgrade package introduced in Hungary but, at least, seems able to abandon the role of backmarker.
