Marc Marquez has been seriously injured. It already seemed clear after the images of the accident the Spaniard suffered during the Le Mans Sprint and even more so the feeling grew watching the TV footage inside the paddock, when the reigning world champion could not even put his right foot on the ground.

Now the fear has become certainty with the official statement released by Ducati: “Following the accident during the Sprint at the French GP and after a medical examination and an X-ray, Marc has been declared unfit to race due to a fracture of the fifth metatarsal of the right foot. He will leave for Madrid tonight to undergo surgery in the coming days. He will not participate in next week’s Catalan GP. We will provide further information as soon as possible“.

The interview with Sky Sport MotoGP

Marquez then personally gave a further rather significant announcement, speaking to the microphones of Sky Sport MotoGP. The Spaniard explained that part of the problems he had during this season were related to a further problem with his right shoulder and the operations that followed the injury last year in Indonesia. Now the nine-time world champion will try to solve this issue as well with a double operation.

“Today’s accident? When I fall I always try to get up quickly – Marquez said to Sky Italia but I had already seen that there was some problem with the foot. Fortunately, only the fifth metatarsal broke and this is a fracture that requires surgery. At this point came Marquez’s ‘revelation‘: “We will do everything together: I hadn’t said anything until now, but I had already planned a surgery on the right shoulder. After the Jerez race I perfectly understood that there was some problem. I tried to go on convinced I was fine, but after seeing the doctor I realized there was something. Looking closely it was seen that since the fall in Indonesia everything is fine, but the screw that was broken is a bit bent. Now the broken screw is in a slightly different direction, by a millimeter or two, but it touches the radial nerve. That nerve is the one that controls the whole arm and this is why I am riding inconsistently. Because when the screw touches the nerve I can’t ride well. This is also the reason for such strange falls. Now it takes some calm to remove this screw: it’s a long operation but not so risky and then we have to see how it evolves“.

“This was the reason why I was going so slowly this weekend – Marquez further explained to Sky but the fall was a moment of relaxation, because I knew there was one lap missing. I relaxed but at that point I didn’t steer the bike as I thought: my body didn’t follow and so the fall happened. The important thing, however, is that now we try to fix everything. Obviously I will miss the Catalan race and we will see about Mugello. This shoulder surgery in the end does not require a long recovery, but they have to open and remove this screw. It’s true that someone might ask why I didn’t notice before, but I had a very strange feeling. At home or riding the motocross bike I felt fine, but then I told the doctor that when I was riding the MotoGP I felt bad. They saw that with the position of a MotoGP when I put my arm forward this screw touched the nerve. For this reason during the weekend I was getting worse and worse and I felt the arm gradually locking up. Now at least there is a solution”, he concluded.
