Tragedy at the Ring
It was supposed to be a festive weekend for Max Verstappen and for all motorsport enthusiasts at the Nürburgring. Instead, it turned into a tragedy due to the death of 66-year-old driver Juha Miettinen, who passed away following a terrible crash involving six other cars during the second lap of the first of the two NLS ‘Qualifiers’ races.
The race was naturally interrupted and subsequently cancelled. Today, however, they will return to the track to compete in race 2, with the start scheduled for 1:00 PM. Verstappen and his team will be regularly at the start, but the four-time F1 world champion certainly did not remain indifferent to yesterday evening’s events.
Via social media, the Dutchman indeed published a message of condolence for Miettinen’s passing, expressing all his shock at what happened: “I am shocked by what happened today – Verstappen wrote on Instagram late last night – motorsport is something we all love, but in moments like this it reminds us how dangerous it can be. I extend my deepest condolences to Juha’s family and loved ones”. Today all cars will race in mourning.
