Mekies: “We need to understand the reasons for the step back compared to Melbourne”

Looking for a recovery

There seems to be no way out of the performance crisis in which Red Bull found itself in China. The Milton Keynes team, which had seemed competitive at least at the level of McLaren in Australia, on the Shanghai track has instead transformed into a mid-field team, barely in contention for the last positions of the points zone with Alpine and Haas. The team principal of the Austro-British team, Laurent Mekies, acknowledged the difficulties of the RB22 at the end of qualifying, hoping that this negative weekend can at least help the team take steps forward for the future.

Mekies wants more

It has certainly been a complicated weekend so far – Mekies admitted – which already started in a difficult way yesterday during FP1. From the very first laps we were unable to find the same feeling with the car that we had in Melbourne last week, so it was a bit of a struggle. Max, Isack and the whole team have worked very hard to reduce the gap from the competition and find a better feeling with the car”.

We made some small progress to reduce the gap in terms of performance, but obviously it is not enough and it is not something we can be satisfied with – the French manager further explained – the most important aspect is to understand, during tomorrow’s race, why this weekend was more difficult for us compared to Melbourne. In any case, there will be huge lessons to be learned from tomorrow’s race: as we saw in Melbourne and in this morning’s Sprint, there will be no lack of action on the track and we will work hard to seize any opportunity that comes our way”.
