MotoGP, new format for 2027?

The colleagues from Motorsport reported the idea of MotoGP to introduce a second qualifying session during the race weekend , following the F1 model: one for the Sprint and one for the Grand Prix. And the change could come into effect as early as 2027.
The proposal was discussed among the championship organizer, the teams, and the manufacturers and was “favorably received” by most of them.

But not only that, because on the table there is also the idea of increasing the qualifying segments from two to three, adding Q3 and thus a second elimination round.
There is still no clarity on the format model, although the Sprint should keep its Saturday afternoon slot.

Safety first or show first?

If the original 22 races of the 2026 calendar (before cancellations) are confirmed, the count is easy: MotoGP riders will be required to start 44 races and participate in 44 qualifying sessions.
Something absolutely nonsensical, especially considering how much injuries have increased since the introduction of the Sprint and how few weekends have seen all the main riders on track.

But on the other hand, if you follow the show, these are the results. The danger level of MotoGP is extreme and certainly this reform proposal does not head towards safety.
It will mean for the riders exposing themselves to even greater risks, injuries, fatigue, and an increasingly wearing career that risks being significantly shortened.
We always come back to the same point, which we have talked about several times this year: without a riders’ association, the 22 protagonists of MotoGP will never have a say. When will they decide to make themselves heard? Were the warning bells of this 2026 not enough? Riders, are you okay with racing the MacelloGP?
