F1 Zandvoort, the report of Free Practice 1

The only free practice session at Zandvoort, affected by a track still partially wet and certainly dirty, saw the World Championship leader, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, stand out. The Italian from Mercedes was very effective in the qualifying simulation, despite an aborted first lap due to traffic. The Bolognese was the only one to lap in FP1 under the 1:13 barrier and distanced by 121 thousandths the McLaren of an excellent Lando Norris, absolutely in the running – at least for now – to try to repeat the success achieved before the summer in Budapest. Third position for George Russell, with the second Mercedes. The Englishman took a while to get close to the teammate’s performance but closed the session 125 thousandths behind Antonelli’s time.

And Ferrari? It’s there, but further back. Lewis Hamilton closed the session with the fourth best time just under two tenths from Antonelli, while Charles Leclerc placed behind him and in the last timed attempt even risked a spin, showing an SF-26 still not well balanced. Much further behind all the others, with Oscar Piastri sixth over six and a half tenths from first place. Completing the top 10 are Hulkenberg, Gasly, Bortoleto, and Lindblad. Red Bull is struggling, at least for now: Max Verstappen was only 11th, Liam Lawson 14th. A difficult return to the track also for Yuki Tsunoda, who set the 17th time about eight tenths behind teammate Lindblad.
