F1 Netherlands, Sprint Qualifying Report

In a fiercely contested sprint qualifying session, George Russell takes pole position with a time of 1:11.567, beating McLaren’s Lando Norris and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. For number 63, this is an important result, more for morale than for the standings. Also because Kimi Antonelli is fifth: the Bolognese driver paid for a gravel excursion in SQ1 with 25 points of downforce lost, which then translated into a gap of over two tenths despite Mercedes initially telling him that the W17 had no damage.

The top four are within a tenth, demonstrating the balance at the top. There is definitely McLaren, which brought the second part of the package introduced at the Hungaroring here: Norris stops 41 thousandths behind, also encouraging is Oscar Piastri’s fourth place at 99 thousandths from pole. On the other hand, Ferrari had a mixed Friday, debuting the new floor in the Sprint Qualifying: Leclerc is 55 thousandths from pole, but Lewis Hamilton had a not exactly flawless lap and finishes only seventh, six tenths behind. Excluding Liam Lawson, Sir Lewis is the worst among the top team drivers, even behind a Red Bull that has not been on form so far: Max Verstappen is sixth, Lawson was eliminated in SQ2.

Among the top ten are also Pierre Gasly and Gabriel Bortoleto, authors of a great Friday. Arvid Lindblad no longer even makes news, very close to Verstappen’s time in SQ2: the British driver of Swedish origin could not repeat in the final lap but will start tenth. Also good is the return to the track of Yuki Tsunoda, 12th, while it is another bad day for Aston Martin: on Fernando Alonso’s AMR26 equipped with the new power unit, the active aerodynamics were not working; the Spaniard therefore finishes last behind the Cadillacs.
