Verstappen: “I want to end my career at Red Bull and now I am closer to this goal”

The return from the summer break was ignited by the news of Max Verstappen’s renewal with Red Bull until 2030. In his last appearance at his home circuit in Zandvoort, the Dutch driver made headlines even before stepping on the track, effectively silencing all doubts that had plagued him in recent months not only about staying with Red Bull but about his future as a protagonist in Formula 1.

Verstappen closer to fulfilling his dream

In a very crowded press conference (which FormulaPassion.it also attended), Verstappen clearly explained the reasons that led him to choose to stay in Milton Keynes for another four years, effectively extending the previous contract deadline set for the end of 2028.

“For me, having been part of this team for so long, it is definitely like a second family – Verstappen began – We have won a lot and have already shared incredible moments together. And then, of course, there is Laurent Mekies’ arrival last year: I believe that from the start the relationship has been really great, very open and transparent. And that is why, from my side, the decision was driven precisely by these factors: the future and some internal strategic decisions within the team“.

“For me, continuing here is absolutely the right choice. I have always said it, and I said it even when Dietrich (Mateschitz, ed.) was still alive, that my goal was to finish my career with this team. And I believe we are getting closer to this milestone. Obviously, there are still many years ahead, but this remains the goal. That’s why I am very proud to extend the contract and obviously to try to return to the top”.

Retirement was a concrete option

The first part of 2026 was full of frustration for Verstappen, not so much because of Red Bull’s lack of competitiveness but because of a regulation that – in his opinion – distorts the role and characteristics of the driver, no longer giving him any emotion. The changes introduced on the eve of the Miami GP helped, but the FIA’s intention to introduce new changes in the next two years gave a turn to his convictions.

“I have to say that after the first races I told Laurent: ‘no, don’t come asking me about the future’. I didn’t even know if I wanted to stay in Formula 1 – Max explained – However, I have to say that we have always maintained a very open attitude. I love racing and I believe I have had many great discussions with F1 and the FIA. I think we are gradually working towards something that keeps improving”.

“Of course, I have adapted as well. I accept the situation we are all in and try to make the best of it. And I also think that the year I signed opens doors for me, maybe when the time comes for V8 engines, to reconsider new possibilities“.
